  1. I knew they stopped believing when I told them about the masks. They’d been very diligent at first, and kind. The teacher had gotten an advisor, the advisor had gotten the principal, and the principal had immediately contacted the district counselor, who’d promptly contacted the local authorities, who in turn had sent their specialist, a lovely woman of unknown age who could make a twelve-year-old comfortable enough to talk. My parents, alerted and concerned, waited in an adjoining room as I gave my testimony.
